Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena highlighted the key role of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in democratizing higher education and contributing to India’s goal of becoming the world’s third-largest economy by producing a skilled and competent workforce. Addressing a ceremony on the occasion of the 38th foundation anniversary of the university, Saxena lauded IGNOU for embodying the principles of inclusiveness enshrined in the National Education Policy 2020, for which it has been awarded the title of ‘People’s University’.

Saxena lauded the University of Illinois as a beacon of intellectual and academic excellence in the field of inclusive and distance education. He emphasized the University’s commitment to providing flexible, learner-centered, cost-effective and high-quality education that ensures equitable access to higher education for all.

Saxena acknowledged the importance of the National Education Policy 2020, highlighting its transformative potential and alignment with the global agenda, especially the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. He urged IGNOU to utilize emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and virtual reality to achieve global education standards.

Advocating a holistic approach to education, Saxena emphasized the importance of improving students’ skills, vocational education and a balanced focus on both in-class and extra-curricular activities for the overall development of students. He believes that the National Open University of India is well positioned to address educational challenges through innovative approaches and make a significant contribution to India’s aspirations to become a global leader in education and economic development.
